Fiji & Tahiti -
The settlement of the South Pacific Islands began over 30,000 years ago with the
Australoid peoples, with more migrations of Papuans and Austronesians coming from New
Guinea and Asia. It was not until 1,000 BC that the ethnic Polynesians who we know today
began to move east into the Samoas and Tonga. Even though western explorers discovered the
Pacific Ocean in 1513, the European colonial powers were unable to control and exploit
these lands for another 250 years. In 1768, the French explorer Bougainville was received
extremely well on the island of Tahiti and claimed it for France.

For more than 50,000 years the Aboriginal people lived in harmony with the land on this
continent now known as Australia. Their stories of "The Dreamtime" link the
spiritual world with the land and are based on cultural, historical and ancestral
traditions.
From the southern tip of Tasmania to the northern extremity of Arnhem Land, hundreds of
Aboriginal tribes once lived throughout Australia, speaking more than 500 distinct
languages. Early rock paintings and carvings appear to show contact with the peoples of
Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and early Dutch and European explorers.
